Shrub Oak is a compact hamlet of about 2,100 people (2020 Census) on 1.6 square miles in northern Yorktown, near the Taconic State Parkway, where a stone bridge carries local traffic over the road. Most children here attend the Lakeland Central School District, and most houses are owner-occupied single-family homes along streets off Route 6, Stony Street and around Sparkle Lake.
The hamlet sits at about 440 feet, on the wooded side of town toward Putnam County. That means real winters and a lot of trees. A roof in Shrub Oak has to manage snow at the eaves and a steady fall of leaves and twigs, often on a house that has been re-roofed at least once already. Those three things, snow, trees and age, are what we look at first when we climb a roof here.
Mid-century homes on wooded lots
Shrub Oak had 612 housing units in 2000, most of them family homes. The hamlet follows the town-wide pattern in Yorktown's housing plan, where 21.5 percent of homes were built in the 1950s and 22.4 percent in the 1960s.
On houses of that age, the work tends to be underneath the shingles: old layers, tired decking and attics that need better airflow.
What to plan for on a Shrub Oak roof
Gutters and valleys under the trees
Wooded Shrub Oak lots fill gutters every October and keep shaded slopes damp. Clogged gutters back water up under the first course of shingles, especially in winter. Jersey Roofing pairs a new roof with properly pitched gutters and guards suited to the leaf type, and we recommend algae-resistant shingles for slopes that rarely see full sun.
Full tear-off on second-generation roofs
If your house went up in the 1950s or 1960s, it has probably been re-roofed at least once, sometimes as an overlay. Jersey Roofing's crew removes everything to the deck, checks for rot at the eaves where ice dams have soaked the wood, and replaces damaged sheathing. A clean deck is also what GAF and Owens Corning require for their best system warranties.
Northern-county winters
Shrub Oak's elevation and inland location mean more snow and ice than the southern county sees. The state code requires an ice-barrier membrane at the eaves, and Jersey Roofing's crew extends it up valleys and around chimneys. Balanced ventilation keeps the deck cold so snow melts off evenly rather than building ice dams.
