Two kinds of coverage
Every roof warranty answers two separate questions. Read them separately, because most marketing blurs them together.
- Materials coverage answers: what if the shingles or accessories are defective? Both GAF and Owens Corning offer lifetime materials coverage on their architectural shingles, even with a standard warranty.
- Workmanship coverage answers: what if the roof was installed wrong? Standard manufacturer warranties don't cover this at all. Only enhanced warranties registered by certified contractors do, and the longest coverage is reserved for the top tier.
Many leaks trace back to installation details such as flashing, nailing, valleys and ventilation, not to defective shingles. That's why the workmanship column below is the one to read first.
Every tier, side by side

Simplified from GAF and Owens Corning warranty documents current as of October 2026, for a single-family home with qualifying shingles and accessories. Materials coverage on lifetime shingles runs as long as you own the home; the column shows the period when it isn't prorated. Visit gaf.com/warranties for complete coverage and restrictions, and see Owens Corning's warranty page for its terms. The written warranty controls.
The fine print, in plain language
“Lifetime” means as long as you own the home
Both manufacturers define lifetime coverage as lasting as long as the original owner owns a single-family home, or the second owner if the warranty was transferred properly. It is not a promise about how long the shingles will last. See how long roofs actually last.
Non-prorated vs. prorated
During the non-prorated period, which GAF calls Smart Choice Protection and Owens Corning calls TRU PROtection®, a covered defect is repaired or replaced at no cost for materials and labor. After it ends, the manufacturer pays a shrinking share. On a standard warranty that period is 10 years. On enhanced system warranties it's 50.
Tear-off and disposal
Fixing a defective roof means removing the old one first, which is a large part of the cost. GAF's System Plus, Silver Pledge® and Golden Pledge®, and Owens Corning's Preferred and Platinum Protection workmanship coverage, include tear-off and disposal when a covered repair requires it. Standard warranties don't.
Registration is the contractor's job
Enhanced warranties exist only if the contractor registers them: within 45 days for GAF, and within 60 days for Owens Corning. When Westchester Roof Pros books your roof, Jersey Roofing registers it. Ask for the registration confirmation in writing and keep it with your closing documents.
Transferring to the next owner
- GAF: transferable once. The buyer must notify GAF in writing within one year of the sale. Transfers within the first 20 years keep full coverage.
- Owens Corning: transferable once. The buyer applies within 60 days of the sale and pays a $100 fee. If the sale happens more than 20 years after installation, Platinum Protection's workmanship coverage ends at transfer.
A transferable warranty is a selling point when you list the house, so keep the paperwork.
What voids or limits coverage
- Inadequate ventilation. Both manufacturers exclude damage caused by poor attic ventilation. See why ventilation matters.
- Missing system components. Enhanced warranties require a set number of the manufacturer's own components, such as underlayment, starter, leak barrier, ridge cap and ventilation. Leaving them out or mixing in other brands can drop you to a standard warranty.
- Overlays. GAF's Golden Pledge® isn't available over an existing roof.
- Wind beyond the rating. Each shingle has a wind warranty with installation requirements. GAF's WindProven™ coverage for LayerLock® shingles has no maximum wind speed. Owens Corning Duration® is rated to 160 mph with the enhanced installation.
- Later work by others. Satellite dishes, solar mounts and repairs by other contractors can affect coverage. Call us before anyone drills into the roof.
How to choose
If both manufacturers' top warranties are on the table, the coverage is close enough that the shingle should decide. Pick the color and profile you like, the wind and impact rating that suits your exposure, and the algae protection your lot needs. The things worth comparing between contractors are different: is the contractor certified at the top tier, will it register the top warranty, and does the contract say so in writing? When Westchester Roof Pros books your roof, it's installed by Jersey Roofing, a GAF Master Elite® and Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor that can register either manufacturer's top warranty.
