Peekskill is a city of about 25,400 people (2020 Census), roughly 35 miles north of New York City. It was incorporated as a village in 1816 and as a city in 1940, and it grew as an iron and manufacturing town. That 19th-century growth left a dense core of Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian buildings, many of them still houses today.
The city covers about 4.3 square miles of land, and most of it is hillside. Streets climb from the riverfront at Charles Point up through Fort Hill and toward Drum Hill, so many roofs face the Hudson directly. Tall, steep roofs on exposed slopes are the norm here, and that affects how Jersey Roofing's crew stages a job, how they flash it, and how they fasten the shingles.
Victorian rooflines on a hillside city
The Nelson Avenue-Fort Hill Historic District is mostly late-Victorian houses, and the Downtown Historic District holds about 150 buildings in Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian styles. These roofs have turrets, dormers, intersecting gables and sometimes built-in box gutters, with many valleys and wall joints that each need their own flashing.
Outside the districts, Peekskill has a broad mix of 20th-century houses around Depew Park and on the hills, many of them simpler roofs that still face the same river wind.
What to plan for on a Peekskill roof
Flashing on complex Victorian roofs
A Victorian in the Fort Hill area may have a dozen valleys, a turret and several dormers. Leaks on these houses almost always start at flashing, not in the open field of shingles. Jersey Roofing's crew replaces step flashing at every wall, rebuilds dormer cheeks, and uses copper or metal valleys where the roof sheds a lot of water. Box gutters get inspected and relined, because rot there spreads into the rafter tails.
Steep pitches and staging
Steep roofs on narrow, sloped Peekskill lots need careful planning. Jersey Roofing's crew sets roof brackets and fall protection for the pitch, plans dumpster placement where the street grade allows, and protects landscaping and neighboring property. On a hillside, debris control matters even more, since anything that falls keeps rolling. We walk the site with you during the free inspection and explain the plan.
Wind off the Hudson
Houses on the river-facing slopes take wind straight off the water. Jersey Roofing's crews fasten shingles to enhanced-wind specs, with GAF starter strips at eaves and rakes, or the Owens Corning Duration system with OC starter and hip and ridge, which carries a 160 mph enhanced wind warranty. Ice-barrier membrane at the eaves, required by code here, also helps resist wind-driven rain.
Historic districts and design review
Peekskill has two National Register districts: the Downtown Historic District (2005) and the Nelson Avenue-Fort Hill Historic District (2006). In locally designated historic districts, the city's Historic & Landmarks Preservation Board requires a Certificate of Appropriateness before any exterior alteration, and a roof counts. Contact the board before you choose a material or color. Boards often favor a slate look on Victorian houses, which designer shingles like GAF Camelot II or Slateline can provide. We'll prepare the samples and specifications you need for the application.
