Irvington took its name in 1854 from Washington Irving, whose Sunnyside home is now a museum, and it became part of the Gilded Age "Millionaires' Row" of riverfront estates. Many of those estates were later subdivided, and planned enclaves such as Matthiessen Park, Jaffray Park and Spiro Park filled in around them. The village climbs steeply from the Hudson to the Old Croton Aqueduct.

Irvington homes use two ZIP codes, 10533 for most of the village and 10503 for Ardsley-on-Hudson, but permits for both come from the Village of Irvington Building Department at 85 Main Street, and Jersey Roofing files them for you. For designated local landmarks, the Board of Architectural Review must approve any exterior alteration, restoration or reconstruction, which includes a roof that changes the house's appearance.

Estate-era houses on a steep river hillside

Irvington's housing is shaped by its estate history: large older houses, carriage-era outbuildings converted to homes, and the planned parks laid out on former estate land. The about 200 homes from 1859 to 1930 that the village has flagged span several decades of styles, and landmarks such as the octagonal Armour-Stiner House and the Italianate villa Nuits show how unusual some of the roof shapes can be.

What to plan for on a Irvington roof

  • Unusual roof shapes need custom flashing

Older Irvington houses can have curved or many-sided roofs, towers, eyebrow dormers and steep intersecting valleys that do not suit standard flashing kits. Jersey Roofing's crew bends and fits flashing on site and uses copper where the roof calls for it. Before quoting, we identify the existing material, because some of these houses still have slate or other specialty roofing that may be worth repairing.

  • Westerly wind up the hillside

The village rises steeply from the river, so many slopes face west across the Hudson. On those roofs Jersey Roofing uses the enhanced-wind installation from GAF or Owens Corning: starter strips at eaves and rakes, plus matching hip and ridge caps. For Owens Corning Duration, that system qualifies for the 160 mph enhanced wind warranty.

  • Estate trees and steep access

Mature trees from Irvington's estate era overhang many roofs, dropping debris into valleys and keeping slopes damp. Steep lots also make staging harder, since equipment often has to sit on a slope or a narrow drive. We note ladder and lift access, debris routes and landscape protection during the inspection so Jersey Roofing's crew can plan for them, and recommend algae-resistant shingles on shaded slopes.

Historic districts and design review

Irvington's Main Street Historic District was listed on the National Register in 2014. For designated local landmarks, the village Board of Architectural Review must approve any exterior alteration, restoration or reconstruction, and a new roof that changes appearance falls under that rule. If your home is a designated landmark, plan for review before materials are ordered. Slate-look products such as GAF Camelot II or Slateline, or Grand Sequoia for a wood-shake look, are options when original materials are not practical.

Roofing questions from Irvington homeowners

My home is a designated landmark in Irvington. What does that mean for a new roof?

The village Board of Architectural Review must approve exterior alterations to designated local landmarks, and a roof that changes material, color or profile counts. Plan for that step before scheduling the job. We provide samples and specifications for your application and can recommend products that keep the original look.

I live in Ardsley-on-Hudson. Is that the Village of Ardsley?

No. Ardsley-on-Hudson uses the 10503 ZIP code but is part of the Village of Irvington, so roofing permits come from the Irvington Building Department. The Village of Ardsley is a separate village inland. Jersey Roofing files with the right office either way.
